Basketball generally falls into a few different seasons and levels of play. This page is intended to help families understand their options and find places for players to continue developing outside of the Select season.
Disclaimer: This list is intended as a community resource only and does not represent an endorsement, recommendation, or affiliation with any particular program, coach, trainer, or organization. Families are encouraged to conduct their own research and determine the best fit for their player and family goals.
Winter / In-Season Basketball: September/October through March (when Select basketball plays, most players play with their school-feeder teams).
Spring/Summer Basketball: Varies by program, often beginning in April and running through summer.
Fall Ball: Typically September through November as a shorter season that can help players prepare for their Select or school basketball season.
Recreational Basketball
Developmental and skill-building focused, usually without tryouts.
Select Basketball
School-boundary based, offered during the winter season with cut-based tryouts. For example, if you live within the Skyline High School boundary, your player would try out for Skyline Select.
AAU Basketball
Not school-boundary restricted and often offered year-round in seasonal segments. Many AAU programs are highly competitive, though some organizations offer multiple team levels and developmental opportunities. Includes cut-based tryouts.
Rec basketball is intended for players developing their skills, players newer to the sport, and those continuing to build foundational skills.
Fall and spring leagues, camps, and training opportunities focused on placing players at the appropriate skill level while providing a positive experience.
Issaquah Parks & Recreation
School-based teams, which can be helpful for players who want to get to know kids they may eventually play with in Select.
i9 Sports (Local school gyms)
A good entry-level option for younger players. Registration is often offered seasonally.
YMCA Youth Basketball
Another option for families looking for skill-building and game experience.
These programs may provide skill development, training opportunities, and developmental team options all the way through highly competitive play. Offerings vary significantly by organization, age group, commitment level, and player ability, so we encourage families to research programs carefully to determine the best fit for their player and goals.
These are simply some programs in our local area to help families get started. Many additional basketball programs and opportunities exist beyond this list.
Important: Many spring and summer program tryouts begin as early as February, so families should plan ahead and monitor program websites and social media for timelines and registration information.
