The Committment

Our program is both developmental and competitive. Being selected for a team is a commitment not only to the program and your coaches, but also to your teammates. We’re sharing these expectations before tryouts so families can determine whether the time and commitment required are the right fit.

Season Commitment

During the season, players should expect:

  • Practices to begin the week of October 12, with the season running through mid-March.
  • Two 90-minute practices each week.
  • 16-17 games, typically with 1–2 games per weekend.
  • Playoff weekend to complete regular season play.
  • 3 tournament weekends that may include up to 4 games.
  • A potential to qualify for the State tournament March 19-21 in Spokane.
  • Generally, no games over school breaks, although individual teams may choose to participate in tournaments if player availability allows.

While we work to provide consistent practice times, schedules may vary throughout the season. Families should be prepared to make basketball a regular part of their weekly schedule.

Attendance & Playing Time

Regular practice attendance is an expectation of being on a Select team. Practices are where coaches install offensive and defensive systems, prepare for games, establish roles, and build team chemistry. When players regularly miss practice, it affects not only their individual development but also what coaches and teammates can accomplish together.

We understand that illness, school obligations, family events, and unavoidable conflicts happen, and we do not expect perfect attendance. We do expect players to attend consistently and families to communicate with coaches when conflicts arise. Coaches will work to provide meaningful opportunities for all players, but playing time may not always be equal. Attendance, effort, preparation, game situations, and team needs may all factor into playing-time decisions.

Player Development

Team practices are primarily designed to develop the team. While coaches will work on individual skills, two practices per week cannot provide every player with all the repetitions needed to improve shooting, ball handling, finishing, footwork, and other individual skills.

Players who want to continue improving are encouraged to take some ownership of their development outside of scheduled practices. This does not necessarily mean additional formal training. It can be getting shots up at the YMCA, working on ball handling at home, practicing at an outdoor court, or simply finding opportunities to get additional reps. Players can also ask their coach for ideas on areas they can work on independently.

Teams may occasionally practice with another SBSB team as well. Combined practices can provide additional competition, different matchups, and opportunities for coaches to work with players in different groupings.

Accepting a Roster Spot

Because roster spots are limited, accepting a spot means making a season-long commitment to your coaches and teammates.

We ask players to be present, prepared, engaged, and ready to contribute. When teammates consistently show up for one another, coaches can build from one practice to the next, players develop trust and chemistry, and the entire team has a better opportunity to improve and compete together.

Before accepting an offered roster spot, please take a look at your player’s other activities and your family’s overall schedule and make sure you can realistically accommodate the commitment.

We know our players are busy kids, and we support them having interests and commitments outside of basketball. Our goal is simply to be transparent before teams are formed so families understand what participation in Skyline Boys Select Basketball involves.
